Movie |《Atonement》

2017年9月18日

I would like to mark down my feelings before the memory fade away. Frankily speaking, I don’t think it would vanish after all.

Though it is my first time to watch the movie, 《Atonement》, it gave me a deep impression from not only the story itself, but also the people’s fate whose are linked to the special age.

Appearently, it was a love story between Cecilia and Robbie, however, their love seed had not had enough time to sprout but was destroyed by Briony, Cecilia’s sister, who, as far as I am concerned, she was jealousy about Robbie’s true love feeling to Cecilia.

If Robbie didn’t went into the prison due to Briony’s accuse, would he develop a good and smooth relationship with Cecilia considering the clear difference in social class? But if this question set up, then there is no point for this story.

Because of the wrong accuse, and because of the war, it set up a tone of sadness towards their love. But what is love.

I seldom talk about love in my writing, but in this movie, it did show me one kind of love, which is supposed to overcome any obstacle. During the war, as a normal person who cannot predict what will happen in the next minute, then love is the only thing that he/she feels real, and it actually burst out energy and a sense of survival to confront the uncertainty. This is the love that I felt from Cecilia and Robbie’s story, which is brave and outspoken.

The chemical reaction was quite strong between them, everytime I saw the scene in which they were talking or staring at each other, I could feel heartbeat of my own, let alone those scenes that they were hugging or kissing.

It was very enjoyable to watch the movie as all the scene were beautifully shot, especially the description of the Battle of Dunkirk. It is not wasting to have these grand and magnificent scenes. In other words, the flagrant contrast between the cruelty of the war and the tiny but strong sentiment of lovers, gave me an impression on what is love.

Maybe in Peacetime, love is some kind of chase between man and woman, however, in war times, love is something to be honored and remembered, not only because of its rarity but because of its preciousness.

No one knows how long will the love last or when will it disappear. The worst is that the person you love no longer exists in the world, and you need to sorrow all the day and night by yourself alone. It definitely turns out to be a tragedy no matter how we put it.

I understand the theme of this movie is about “Atonement”, but if there is real love within Briony’s heart, then she wouldn’t accuse Robbie wrongly. It is hard to define the reason of a war, but at least, we know that as long as there is some kind of love, we won’t do something with huge harmfulness.

There is something in the world that one can not trace back, such as time; There is some sin that one can not atone, such as damage to others’ life or right.

If there is no tomorrow to come, will we be brave enough to do what we want to do, to say what we want to say, and to meet someone who we want to meet?

My favorite lines of this movie is what Robbie said——
“Find you, love you, marry you, and live without shame.”

Anyone who can accomplish one of the above, I think it is the true meaning of love.
